Meraas venture in Boxpark row
LONDON, February 12, 2015
Boxpark, the creators of the world’s first pop-up mall, have threatened action against a similar scheme in Dubai which has been launched by Meraas Holding, a Dubai-based holding company with operations and assets in the UAE and overseas,.
Boxpark’s lawyers have written to Meraas demanding that it immediately ceases and desists its use of the Boxpark name in connection with its proposed container retail development in Dubai, the company said in a statement.
Roger Wade, CEO and Founder of Boxpark said Dubai has developed an excellent business relationship with the UK and urged the Dubai Government to encourage Meraas to comply with "our reasonable demands.”
Boxpark opened the world’s first pop-up mall built in London in 2011. Boxpark is created from stripped and refitted shipping containers.
The statement said Meraas had applied for a Boxpark trademark in the UAE in 2013 well over two years after Boxpark London had opened. In September 2014 Meraas was granted the trademark in UAE.
It further added that the UAE is not covered by the Madrid International Trademark System, and trademarks are registered locally in the UAE.
The Meeras venture offers a selection of unique retail experiences and quirky dining concepts from around the world. The development features 44 retail, restaurant, cafe, and entertainment brands, blending the best of local and international concepts appealing to the national and expatriate community in the UAE.
