Top photojournalist shares tips on going digital

DUBAI, January 8, 2015

A leading professional photographer has shared tips on how to go digital and modern as a hard-won professional with photos of Dubai, UAE and Oman, taken with the Samsung NX1.

Photojournalist David Burnett, in his four-decade career has photographed seminal figures, such as Bob Marley, President Obama and John F Kennedy and chronicled moments like the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, said a statement.

“Gravity is a force to be reckoned with,” Burnett said. As a veteran traveler, Burnett moves with as little gear as possible and advises others to do the same.

Mirrorless cameras, which often weigh less and tend to be smaller than DSLRs, have helped him lighten his load without sacrificing quality.

“In a word, it’s quite extraordinary; much smaller in size and weight, and yet amazingly crisp in the finder,” he said of the mirrorless NX1. “You’re no longer looking through the lens via a moving mirror.”

Instead, one can free up their line of sight to focus on the subject, and merely glance at the high-resolution viewfinder to focus the shots.

In Dubai, at 1/4000 second, the photo freezes the dancers in mid-air, laying out their expressions and the extensions of their limbs just as he saw it.

Burnett’s photo of a parkour runner moving along a rooftop would not have been possible without the camera’s speedy trigger. At 15fps, the NX1 missed very little action between frames, and kept its focus across shots, said the statement.

“With the extremely speedy auto focus that the camera employs, you very quickly understand that what you see in the finder is really what the camera is seeing,” Burnett said.

When shooting digital, a high-resolution chip never hurts, Burnett advised. The 28-megapixel chip of the NX1 is in the right range.

“You can blow images way, way up, and they hold together beautifully,” he said. “I was a guy who always shot the slowest films available, and I tend to try and shoot with low ISO’s on my digital cameras, but it’s nice knowing you have the horsepower to go high.”

Meanwhile, with the Samsung NX1, Burnett has been able to use his old lenses, including glass from other manufacturers. His old 135/2 and 200/1.8 lenses can last for the length of his career thanks to compatibility and interconnectivity, said the statement.
