A teenage Bahraini inventor will unveil designs for his second smartphone today (January 8) - with plans to take on some of the biggest names in global telecommunications industry.

However, 17-year-old Baland Rabaya says he needs at least 30,000 pre-orders from customers before the device can be made, reported the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

He released his first phone, the MoreTech 1.0, last October and sold around 50 models.

After seven months of design Baland will launch the follow-up MoreTech 2.0 in an event at the K Hotel at 2pm today.

While the more advanced model may never be created unless at least 30,000 people sign up for one, he remains confident of hitting that target.

"This phone will not exist unless we can get at least 30,000 pre-orders for it, but with the way this phone has been made I think we will reach that very quickly as it will be the fastest, lightest and cheapest phone in its class," he said.

If enough people pre-order the phone, customers will have to wait until April for delivery of their new device - which would be assembled in Bahrain with parts made in China.

Baland, who began designing his first phone at the age of 14, was the first Bahraini to create his own smartphone.

"The first phone we released in October, but we realised the components compared to the competition were becoming inferior so we got to work on the MoreTech 2.0 - or the Mark 2," he said.

"We decided to go to the high-end, flagship market and I think we have really done it.

"We focused on efficiency and battery life, running the standard Android 5.0 Lollipop (operating system).

"What we have done is really extended the battery life and have made the phone lighter and bigger, using a combination of new metals and materials.

"The first phone was good, but it was our tester model.

"This phone is going to be really something - it will be the lightest phone in its category with a 5.5-inch screen that we plan on selling globally."

Baland says he is committed to shunning the conventional economic model - in which hand-held devices are sold for the highest price possible.

"This phone will be assembled in Bahrain and everyone - including the manufactures of the components in China - will be getting paid at least BD10 ($26) an hour," he said.

"That is in line with our company motto, that 'everyone is a winner'.

"From our customers to our employees, everyone should be happy.

"We have not done what big designers have and put a 70 per cent mark up on the device.

"Instead, we are making 15 per cent (profit on each device) - which is how we can offer a super, high-end phone for less than BD150."

He added the latest addition to the MoreTech product line would come in one specification only.

"It will not have models with smaller memory and slower speeds," he said.

"If you get our phone, you get the best speed, the best battery and a ridiculously large amount of storage space, which is great for photographers and even videographers.
