Saudi authorities seize adulterated rice

Riyadh, February 17, 2014

Saudi Arabian authorities have confiscated a trailer with 40 tonnes of adulterated rice in the kingdom, said a report.

The inspectors from the Commerce Ministry had followed a vehicle to a warehouse in the south of Riyadh, the main hub for distribution of substandard quality rice to various shops, where it is repacked with labels of popular brands, said the Arab News report.

The warehouse which employs a large number of Arab nationals is known for such fraudulent activities and its owner is wanted by the authorities, Abdullah Al-Zahrani of the Commerce Ministry was quoted as saying.

Al-Zahrani reiterated that the ministry will take firm action against fraud and supply of substandard food products.

The Commerce Ministry has urged the public to lodge complaints against any fraud in goods or food items by calling its toll free number, said the report.
