Sotheby’s exhibits fancy diamond in Dubai
Dubai, November 21, 2010
Sotheby’s recently exhibited a magnificent diamond in Dubai, which later featured in its sale of Magnificent Jewels.
The rare and magnificent pink diamond weighing 24.78 carats was graded Fancy Intense Pink by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
The Fancy Intense Pink Diamond was exhibited in Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi before coming to Dubai.
The emerald-cut stone, mounted as a ring, has been further assessed to be a member of the rare and coveted type IIa classification which comprises less than 2 per cent of all of the world’s gem diamonds. In addition, while presently graded as VVS2 clarity, the GIA states that the stone may be internally flawless after repolishing.
The pink diamond was offered for sale with a pre-sale estimate of $27-38 million. It came to the market from a private collection and has not appeared on the open market since it was purchased some 60 years ago from Harry Winston.
“What makes it so immensely rare is the combination of its exceptional colour and purity with the classic emerald-cut, a style of cutting normally associated with white diamonds and one that is so highly sought-after when found in rare colours such as pink and blue,” stated David Bennett, chairman, Europe and the Middle East, Sotheby’s International Jewellery Department.
Sotheby’s sale of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in May this year brought a strong total of $54 million, a figure well above pre-sale expectations.-TradeArabia News Service
