Wood, Al Majal to set up new training centre in Basra

BASRA, June 20, 2024

Wood, a global consulting and engineering leader, and its joint venture partner Al Majal, a prominent Iraqi oil and gas services company, have outlined plans for a new vocational training centre in Basra, addressing Iraq’s need for a skilled energy workforce.

The Basra Technical Training Centre will advance training and development opportunities for Iraqis to support the growing number of regional energy projects.

Upon its anticipated opening in early 2025, the centre will offer a comprehensive range of Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) accredited programs, including operations and maintenance, construction management, health, safety and environment, professional leadership training and various other courses. A five-month pilot training program will begin this year ahead of the centre officially opening.

The training centre’s establishment underscores the joint venture’s commitment to developing the local energy workforce in Basra, a statement said. It will enable further upskilling across key technical roles, such as project teams, construction engineers, supervisors, and local contractors. Upon completing their training, Wood Al Majal will support delegates in securing future employment opportunities, it said.
Shaun Dewar, Senior Vice President of Operations, Middle East and Africa at Wood, said: “This new training centre is a key part of our strategy to invest in and develop the national workforce in Iraq providing skills development opportunities for both new entrants and existing industry professionals. We believe a safe, well-trained workforce is key to the success of the energy industry in Iraq and this underlines our commitment to the region’s long-term growth.”

Moreover, a new Wood Al Majal fabrication facility will be established on the same complex, specialising in engineered fabrication to meet international standards. The facility will offer design, engineering, inspection, painting, and fabrication delivery services and is due to be completed in 2025.
