Fire put out at Kirkuk field

Iraq puts out fire at Kirkuk oil field

BAGHDAD, September 25, 2016

Iraq's North Oil Company extinguished a well fire at the Bai Hassan field near the northern city of Kirkuk which had been raging for more than six weeks, the oil ministry said.

The August 10 bombing of Well 34 by Islamic State was one of a string of attacks on oil installations in the area, which is controlled by Kurdish peshmerga forces, since the ultra-hardline jihadists overran a third of Iraqi territory in 2014.

The group has been pushed back off half that territory in the past two years with the help of air strikes from a US-led coalition. -- Reuters
