Six people were killed in a fire on Sunday at a workers camp near a plant being built to process gas from the Khursaniyah oilfield in Saudi Arabia, a source at Consolidated Contractors International Co said on Wednesday.

The fire had no impact on oil and gas output from the 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) oilfield, the source said.

The camp is about 7 km (4.4 miles) away from the gas plant, and houses around 17,000 workers employed by Athens-based CCC and its subcontractors, the source said.

Another fire broke out on Monday at the camp, he added.

Saudi police were investigating the two fires. The dead included workers from Bangladesh, he said.

Work at the gas plant was not affected, he added.

The Khursaniyah oilfield started pumping crude in September, about nine months late, due to construction delays at the gas plant. The gas plant was due to come on line in October. - Reuters
