Sharjah council urges voters to take part in polls
SHARJAH, December 15, 2015
The Sharjah Consulative Council has urged voters to take part in its electoral and political process in order to have a say in the decision-making and development agenda of the emirate.
Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, chairman of the Sharjah Media Centre (SMC), underscored the historic nature of the upcoming elections by registering himself for the SCC polls recently, said a statement.
The registration process for the SCC elections formally kicked off last week at the Sharjah Municipality and other dedicated centres in Sharjah City and in centres across the emirate, including in Dhaid, Khorfakkan, Kalba, Dibba Al Hisn, Hamriya, Maliha, Madam and Al Bataeh, it said.
By introducing the voter registration process, a first in the region, which helps the electoral authorities monitor and conduct polls smoothly in accordance with the set norms and criteria, while ensuring voters’ right to choose right representatives in a transparent manner, Sharjah has taken a bold step towards empowering its people and ensuring their participation in the decision-making process, said Sheikh Sultan.
Pointing out that people are the critical stakeholders in elections to the highest decision-making body in Sharjah, the SMC chairman urged voters in the emirate to make utmost use of this opportunity.
Also present on the occasion were Rashid Sultan Mohammed bin Tulai’ah, chairman of Sharjah City Municipal Council; Tariq Al Naqbi, director of Sharjah Media Centre; and other senior officials and members of media.
Meanwhile, the deadline for registration for the SCC elections has been extended by two days, until December 19.
The SCC Electoral College has been divided into nine constituencies to ensure all citizens are able to register and vote for their respective candidates, said the statement.
The elections to the Consultative Council have been held since 2006, and the process has undergone constant improvement and fine-tuning all these years to ensure people’s empowerment and participation in the political process, it said.
The registration centres across the emirate have remained open during weekdays and weekends and also both in the morning and evening to ensure no one is left out.
The voters can also register for their immediate family members and relatives. - TradeArabia News Service
