Myanmar sailors stranded in Bahrain return home
MANAMA, May 6, 2015
Two sailors from Myanmar who were part of a 16-member crew of an oil tanker stranded in Bahraini waters since December left the country last night.
Bahrain International Seafarers Society chairman Captain Ali Haji Hassan accompanied the two men to Bahrain International Airport, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.
Fourteen Indian sailors left the country on Monday (May 4).
Mongolian vessel MT Surya Kuber was banned from leaving the country because its Singapore-based owner 7Seas Ship Management allegedly owed Asry and Kanoo Shipping more than $220,000.
The vessel's crew have allegedly not been paid salaries totalling around $118,000 since October.
Capt Hassan said all crew members were given $400 and had their legal fees paid for a court case against the ship's owner for alleged non-payment of wages.
The Indian Embassy provided tickets for the Myanmar nationals, while Asry, the American Women's Association and Microcentre helped the sailors with food and amenities while they were stuck on board. - TradeArabia News Service
