UK warns nationals in region over terror hits

MANAMA, November 2, 2014

British nationals are more likely to be targeted by terrorists abroad now that Western military action has been taken against the extremist Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, according to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

In an update to its global travel advice, the FCO warned Britons to 'be vigilant' as there was a 'generalised threat' of terrorism against them, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

'There is considered to be a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria,' it said in its update.

'You should be vigilant at this time.'

The update follows a US Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) notice issued to American citizens last week, warning of jihadi calls to attack Western teachers in Bahrain and the wider region.

It referenced an 'anonymous posting on a jihadist website'.

'The website specifically referenced Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Ma'adi in Egypt as examples of locations with high concentrations of potential targets,' said the OSAC security message.

'Nonetheless, all US citizens should remain vigilant regarding their personal security and alert to local security developments,' it said. – TradeArabia News Service
