Shaikh Albinali ... accused of encouraging young Bahrainis to join insurgencies abroad

Bahraini teenager killed in Iraq raids

MANAMA, September 25, 2014

A Bahraini teenager suspected of fighting alongside an extremist group has been killed in Iraq amidst US military air strikes.

Fourteen-year-old Ibrahim Al Awadhi has been missing since July when he left for pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, and his family located him in Iraq earlier this week, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

However, they learned yesterday (September 24) morning that he was killed in US air raids launched against Islamic State (IS) targets on Tuesday (September 23).

Bahrain was also among five Arab countries that joined US-led military action against the IS in Syria on the same day.

Sources told the GDN the teenager was buried on the outskirts of Baghdad yesterday afternoon.

"The boy, according to his family, left with a group from Bahrain for Umrah during Ramadan and later went to Madinah to study religion," they said.

"The oldest brother and some of his uncles believe that the boy had gone to Iraq with the knowledge and blessing of one of his brothers, who has refused to speak about the issue.

"The family is agitated and has demanded the government take strict action against those who are endangering the lives of young children by brainwashing them."

The boy's uncle Ahmed Al Awadhi said his alleged trip to Saudi Arabia was questionable because his passport was still in his mother's possession.

"He disappeared suddenly during Ramadan and people said he was in Saudi Arabia," he told the GDN.

"The family could not believe this as his passport is still with his mother.

"Two days ago we heard news reports that he is in Iraq and yesterday morning we heard from a group in Iraq that he was killed.

"I do not know about the group that he is with or if he or the group is linked with any extremists groups."

Meanwhile, outgoing MP Shaikh Adel Al Ma'awada, who is also Al Asala Islamic Society senior member, urged authorities to prevent Bahrainis from travelling to Iraq or Syria without legitimate reasons.

"We do not see any justified reason for this boy going to Iraq, so we are left with no choice but to believe that he went to fight with the IS," he told the GDN.

"I cannot confirm if this boy belongs to that group, but definitely there are chances that there are Bahrainis being brainwashed into this fanaticism.

"They take their decisions quick and by the time they realise the stupidity, it would be too late and end up in disasters.

"The masterminds behind such criminal activities, who literally throw these youngsters into death's arms, must be penalised.

"The government must immediately stop anyone below 18 from travelling without parents to states like Syria, Iraq, etc."

Shaikh Al Ma'awada earlier told a regional newspaper that around six young Bahrainis were fighting alongside the IS in Iraq.

The GDN earlier reported that four Bahrainis were killed fighting alongside rebels against the Syrian regime, following which the Interior Ministry warned of penalties for those who join regional conflicts.

Legislators and community leaders earlier accused Bahraini cleric Shaikh Turki Albinali of encouraging young Bahrainis to join insurgencies in Iraq and Syria.

Shaikh Albinali, who joined rebel fighters in March this year, was earlier pictured giving sermons to IS fighters in Mosul, Iraq. - TradeArabia News Service
