New evidence in Bahrain’s Rolex theft trial

Manama, August 11, 2014

New evidence has come to light placing a suspect at the scene of a high-profile Rolex robbery in Bahrain, a court heard.

The Public Prosecution yesterday said that forensic experts have conducted DNA tests that link the Kosovan fugitive to the theft of approximately 80 Rolex watches from a popular shopping mall, reported the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

It presented an urgent request to the High Criminal Court to allow prosecutors time to submit the documents as evidence.

Judges, who were supposed to deliver a verdict yesterday, approved the request and adjourned the trial to September 16.

“The court will be open for defence arguments after documents, including DNA tests for the suspect, are presented,” read court documents.

The fugitive is among eight men standing trial for the robbery, which happened at Bahrain City Centre last September.

Two of the suspects, who are in police custody, allegedly helped conceal and transport the stolen goods out of the country.

Both men, American and Turkish citizens, were arrested on October 1 following a raid on their Manama apartment, from where officers allegedly confiscated some of the watches.

They earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The other six suspects ‘two Kosovans, two Albanians, a Serbian and a Macedonian’ were said to have fled the country just two hours after the heist.

They dressed up as Arab women in abayas and hijabs before breaking into the Rolex shop, attacking a Pakistani security guard and planting fake bombs to aid their escape.

It is understood that at least four of the suspects have been arrested overseas with help from Interpol. - TradeArabia News Service
