Jeddah to ban heavy trucks from entering city

Jeddah, June 5, 2014

Heavy trucks carrying hazardous materials are to be banned from entering Jeddah due to the risks they pose to public safety, said a report.

The trucks will be allocated with alternative routes outside the city to eliminate the risks to smaller cars, roads and infrastructure, Jeddah Traffic Department spokesperson General Zaid Al-Hamzi was quoted as saying in the Arab News report.

"Heavy trucks not only endanger public safety but also cause huge congestions in the city," Al-Hamzi said, adding that the trucks would be provided with alternative routes outside the city's premises.

Meanwhile, Jeddah's residents have applauded the traffic authorities' plans to provide other routes for the truck and gas cylinder distributors which have plagued the city's roads for a long time, added the report.
