Lieutenant General Tamim

'Hizbollah trained Daih blast suspect'

Manama, March 6, 2014

Dubai's chief of police has revealed that at least one of the suspects arrested by Bahraini authorities in connection with Monday's blast, which killed three policemen in Daih, was trained by Hizbollah.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim added the UAE was ready to help Bahrain tackle terrorism by all means necessary, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

Emirati officer First Lieutenant Tariq Al Shehhi, 41, was among the three policemen killed in the blast along with Yemeni Ammar Abdu Ali Al Dhalei, 35, and Pakistani Muhammad Arslan Ramzan, 22.

"The culprit who murdered (Tariq) Al Shehhi visited Lebanon and received explosives training from Hizbollah," Lt Gen Khalfan posted on his Twitter account.

He also described the Bahraini opposition as an "enemy of the GCC".

"Bahrain's opposition is the enemy of the GCC and friend of Iran," he said.

First Lieutenant Al Shehhi, a father-of-four, was in Bahrain as part of the GCC Peninsula Shield Force.

"The Bahrain opposition should know that we are on Bahraini soil to fight terrorism that is being directed by (Iran's)Revolutionary Guard," he said.

The GDN reported yesterday that he also said that 1,000 more Emirati officers should be stationed in Bahrain.

The deadly bomb that went off on Monday was triggered by remote control as police dispersed rioters who attacked them following a funeral procession for Jaffar Al Durazi, an inmate with sickle cell anaemia who died in hospital last week.

He was in police custody after being arrested in connection with a plot to smuggle detonators and explosives into Bahrain by boat.

Bahrain's Interior Minister Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, in a televised address on Tuesday, said 25 suspects had been arrested in connection with the Daih blast.

Parliament's financial and economic affairs committee chairman Abdulhaleem Al Murad yesterday praised the fast action by security forces to round up the suspects.

"In less than 24 hours, 25 suspects were arrested regarding the Daih bomb blast and this shows they are capable of dealing with the situation," he said.

He added anyone found guilty of involvement should face the maximum punishment - regardless of international pressure.

"In the past, we have seen murderers of policemen who were sentenced to death later have their sentences reduced to life imprisonment - this should not happen," said the MP.

"All people of Bahrain want to see the culprits punished in the same way they would be in Europe or the US if such a crime was committed.

"Human rights and terrorism are two separate things and cannot be mixed."

Bahrain's Cabinet on Tuesday agreed a six-pronged plan to combat terrorism. - TradeArabia News Service
