GDN photographer hurt in Bahrain explosion

Manama, March 4, 2014

Gulf Daily News' photographer Ebrahim Al Sinan was injured in yesterday's explosion that killed three policemen in Daih.

He was standing around 10 metres from the officers fatally wounded in the blast and was hit by shrapnel and suffered a lung injury, said a report in the GDN, our sister publication.

The Bahraini is being kept in the BDF Hospital overnight for observation and is expected to make a full recovery.

He was in the area covering a funeral procession of Jaffar Al Durazi, a Bahraini inmate with sickle cell anaemia who died in hospital last Wednesday.

"I was with the riot police when the clashes started and we were standing in a corner," said Al Sinan.

"The group of policemen were marching forward to push back the rioters when we came across what looked like a damaged streetlight cover lying on the road.

"There was a sudden loud noise and I saw bodies of the three policemen flying in front of me as blood was sprayed everywhere."

The impact of the blast was so severe that Al Sinan fell to the ground.

"It was like a strong wind but there was no smoke with the explosion," he said.

"I was numb for a while as officers rushed to pick the bodies of the three injured officers."

The photographer said the scene was one of utter chaos with policemen running everywhere, while others tried to revive the injured.

"I saw the bodies of the three men with blood all around and knew they were dead," he said.

"It was only after a while I started feeling a sharp pain in my ribs and had difficulty in breathing.

"The police were very co-operative and insisted I should be taken to the hospital.

"I will never forget this... I was 10 metres away from the policemen who died."

Bahrain Journalists Association last night condemned the heinous attacks targeting media personnel.

In a statement, it deplored the recurrent cowardly assaults on journalists and attempts to muzzle their mouths through terror.

It also urged the journalists to continue performing their duties prudently. - TradeArabia News Service
