Doctors spared jail for causing daughter's death

Manama, February 3, 2014

Two doctors who caused the death of their six-week-old daughter have escaped a prison term in Bahrain.

The Egyptians were convicted by the High Criminal Court yesterday, but both received 12-month suspended sentences, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The baby was admitted to Salmaniya Medical Complex's Intensive Care Unit on April 17 last year after suffering a heart attack.

It was later discovered she had suffered a brain injury and internal bleeding, while a poisonous drug was found in her blood.

The child died less than a month later.

She reportedly had marks all over her body and, according to police, on one occasion the mother allegedly threw the child onto a bed from a one-metre distance.

Her mother was previously admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital for postnatal depression.

However, a medical report concluded she should be held responsible for her actions.

The child's father previously told prosecutors his wife assaulted their daughter on several occasions when she would not stop crying.

The mother was found guilty of manslaughter and her husband of endangering the child's life.

"The court found both the defendants guilty and she was held responsible even though she suffers from postnatal depression," said court verdict documents.

"A medical examiner's report earlier said she was responsible for her actions even though she suffered from the illness.

"According to the defendants testimonies the mother punched, threw and aggressively shook the infant, who later died of a heart attack.

"He (the husband) said that he saw his wife assault their child several times, including the last time where she dropped the baby on a bed from a height, when she couldn't take her crying." - TradeArabia News Service
