Efforts are being stepped up to repair infrastructure damaged in the aftermath of the torrential rain which has hit Bahrain over the past three days.

Contractors have been directed to repair rain-damaged housing units in Wadi Al Seel, Jidhafs, Arad and Salmabad, said a report in the Gulf Daily News, our sister newspaper.

Owners of several units in these areas have reported leaks due to the downpour.

A Housing Ministry technical team led by assistant under-secretary Sami Bouhazaa visited the four areas to assess damage and tenants' needs.

Contractors have also been instructed to repair damaged units which are still under construction.

The team also visited Al Lawzi residential project, which was flooded following the three-day downpour.

The freak rains also damaged 12 schools.

Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi yesterday gave instructions to repair damaged facilities, restore power, remove fallen trees and drain rainwater.

A specialised engineering firm will also be hired to assess the rooftops and repair any leaks.

The minister stressed the need to build barriers to prevent rainwater from flooding schools - citing particularly Hajer and Budaiya Primary Schools for Girls and Boys which suffered the most. -TradeArabia News Service
