49,000 illegal expat workers in Bahrain

Manama, November 6, 2013

The number of illegal expatriate workers in Bahrain, most of who come from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, has reached 49,000, a senior government official said.

The ministry is co-ordinating efforts with the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and the Interior Ministry to crack down on illegal workers by launching regular inspection campaigns across the kingdom, Labour Minister Jameel Humaidan was quoted as saying by our sister publication Akhbar Al Khaleej.

He added that these workers are accommodated in a special centre until they are deported.

He also revealed that the LMRA has worked out a plan with labour-exporting countries, whereby workers must come under scrutiny before travelling to protect them from being exploited by intermediaries. – TradeArabia News Service
