The United Arab Emirates embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli was attacked on Thursday morning, with no injuries reported, an interior ministry spokesman said.

Diplomatic and security sources said it appeared a rocket-propelled grenade had been fired at the building in the Siahia neighbourhood in western Tripoli.

"An attack happened this morning on the Emirati embassy - there are no casualties. An investigation is under way," Interior Ministry Spokesman Rami Kaal told Reuters without giving further details.

On Tuesday a rocket struck a residential building in Tripoli close to a major hotel, the Corinthia, used by foreign businessmen and government officials, as well as a tower housing several embassies.

Interior Minister Mohammed Khalifa al-Sheikh said on Wednesday the rocket may have been aimed at the Corinthia.

Armed groups have launched a series of attacks on foreign diplomats and buildings since strongman Muammar Gaddafi was toppled in 2011. France's embassy in Tripoli was bombed in April. – Reuters
