Bahrain cuts diplomatic ties with Syria
Manama, December 30, 2012
Bahrain has stopped all forms of diplomatic co-operation with representatives of the Syrian regime abroad and international organisations and congresses, the government said.
Bahrain is committed to implementing economic sanctions and halting commercial ties with the Syrian regime, the government said in reply to a parliamentary proposal to expel Syrian charge d’affaires in Bahrain in solidarity with the Syrian people, according to a report in our sister publication, the Gulf Daily News.
Bahrain has also stopped its participation in Arab League’s peacekeeping mission in Syria, and thus there is no need to take additional measures against the country’s diplomatic mission in Bahrain, the government said.
The Arab League did not call for breaking or freezing diplomatic relations with Syria but urged the withdrawal of Arab ambassadors from the country, which Bahrain did, it said.
Only His Majesty King Hamad has the authority to accept or expel ambassadors and representatives of foreign organisations in the kingdom, the government said. - TradeArabia News Service
