A landmark resolution condemning an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate a Saudi envoy was adopted by the United Nations in New York early today - as it emerged the Saudi Ambassador to Bahrain was also an alleged target for assassination.

The resolution, put forward by Saudi Arabia and co-sponsored by Bahrain, received overwhelming support by members of the UN General Assembly - with 106 countries voting in favour.

Only nine voted against the resolution, while 40 countries abstained.

More than 50 countries co-sponsored the resolution - which specifically calls on Iran to co-operate with an investigation into an alleged attempt to assassinate Saudi Ambassador to the US Adel Al Jubeir.

'The world implicated Iran,' one observer told the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

As the resolution was being presented, Saudi Ambassador to the UN Abdulla bin Yahya Almuallami also condemned an alleged Iranian-backed plot to carry out terrorist attacks inside Bahrain.

'Another terror plot was uncovered which aimed at assassinating Saudi ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain Dr Abdulmohsen bin Fahd Al Marek and targeted the embassy of Saudi Arabia in Bahrain - and included a plan to blow up the King Fahad Causeway, which connects the two kingdoms,' he said.
