Emirati culture, crafts on show at Index

Dubai, October 23, 2011

Sougha, an initiative under the Khalifa Foundation and the Al Khaznah Tannery (AK), an Abu Dhabi based leather tannery, are holding a joint showcase of locally made products at the ongoing International Design Exhibition in Dubai.

Index 2011, which opened yesterday (October 22), will run until October 25 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The exhibit, which is being mounted as part of the inaugural ‘Festival of Interior Design’ (FoID), aims to highlight the unique beauty and charm of local Emirati crafts and AK leather ranges and the move to infuse these home grown and handmade products across today’s more modern and sophisticated design undertakings.

The stand, which measures around nine square metres, looks towards creating a modern and fresh look that combines cultural artefacts like Sadou, Khous and Gargour with local materials like camel leather whilst also incorporating a modern design approach to bring in an element of sophistication and innovation.

The stand’s design draws inspiration from global brands like the Missoni Home, and succinctly blends it with Emirati culture, which is widely known for its use of colorful patterns, prints and textures.

The exhibit features key items like chairs that feature AK camel leather and woven fabric from Sougha; lighting fixtures inspired by traditional fish- nets called ‘Gargour’ and cushions that have been made from woven camel leather.

“The UAE is home to some of the most fascinating handicrafts in the region and creative artisans who continue to keep traditions like weaving and use of indigenous elements,” said Leila Ben Gacem, senior manager Entrepreneurship Development Dept, Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development.

“Being able to showcase the products of the Sougha initiative brings us one step closer to our objective of highlighting the uniqueness of traditional Arabic handmade products. We thank the organizers of FoID for allowing us the opportunity to promote the works of our local craftsmen and help keep the tradition of local weaving practices alive.”

Jean-Marie Gigante, general manager, Al Khaznah Tannery, said: “We are very proud of the positive results and feedback that we have received for this joint initiative. The strong response is both testament to the commitment to preserve UAE cultures and tradition and also inspires us to continue helping local artisans in promoting their handmade products across strategic events like FoID.”

“Participating in local events and creating partnership with key players in the public and private sectors has helped increase more awareness about the Sougha and Al Khaznah initiatives and secure sales channels to help us tap into a wider market.” – TradeArabia News Service
