Bahrain-link killer jailed for 24 years

Manama, October 4, 2011

A man extradited to Britain from Bahrain last year after 11 years on the run has been sentenced to 24 years for murder.

Lebanese national Yousef Ahmed Wahid, 42, was convicted at London's Old Bailey in August for the murder of Moroccan-born Canadian Fatima Kama in 1999.

He had been charged with the murder of 28-year-old Kama at Westminster Magistrates Court in September last year, just days after being extradited from Bahrain.

The suspect was captured by Bahrain police in August last year, after a three-month investigation based on information from London's Scotland Yard.

Kama's body was found in a black suitcase abandoned on the third floor of a car park at London's Heathrow Airport on July 17, 1999.

A security guard forced open the bag and found her body inside, in the fetal position. A post-mortem examination revealed she had been stabbed more than 10 times.

A regular visitor to the UK, she had been due to her parents' home in Montreal when she vanished.

According to news reports, Wahid slit her throat and inflicted multiple stab wounds after having sex at a property they were staying at in central London.

It is claimed that CCTV footage showing Wahid hauling the suitcase containing Kama's body on to a train to Heathrow was used as evidence in the case.

Wahid was first arrested in his hometown of Ramadiyeh in southern Lebanon within days of the discovery of the case.

He reportedly denied having anything to do with the killing and vanished after being released.

The former Kuwait Airways steward is believed to have entered Bahrain in November 2009 on a genuine Lebanese passport, but one which identified him as Ibrahim Fawzi Hadid. He was working at a private company and living in A'ali at the time of his arrest.

There is no formal extradition agreement between Bahrain and the UK, but Mr Wahid was sent to Britain to stand trial based on an extradition order obtained through the courts.

Judge Paul Worsley told Wahid yesterday: "You're an intelligent man but a devious and manipulative man. There is indication of significant physical suffering before her death. You callously concealed her body in a suitcase." – TradeArabia News Service
