Bahrain will launch a national fund to ensure 'substantial' compensation for victims of recent unrest.

Details were outlined at yesterday's Cabinet session, chaired by HRH Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

Ministers then approved a legal decree on the establishment of the fund.

The National Compensation and Redress Fund will be under the authority of the Human Rights and Social Development Ministry.

The initiative follows royal directives to promote national laws and legislation aimed at protecting rights.

It is also in harmony with the guiding principles issued by the UN General Assembly on affected people's rights of redress, said a Cabinet statement.

Concerned authorities have been instructed to draw up legal tools and submit them to the Cabinet.

In another development, the Interior Ministry is to set up a general directorate for economic and cyber security and anti-corruption.

The initiative is in line with HRH the Premier's directives to expand the powers of the ministry's anti-economic crimes directorate, which will be revamped.
