Makro sets up tent for customers

Cairo, July 14, 2011

Makro Egypt, the country's first wholesale store, has opened a make-shift tent to cater to its customers in Al Salam City in Cairo after its store was destroyed in the recent unrest that rocked the country.

At the new Makro Egypt tent, customers will have access to a wide range of  food and non-food products including the essential items needed for the holy month of Ramadan. The tent will be the main retail unit untill the store gets rebuilt.

The Makro Egypt store in Al Salam City in the Egyptian capital was shut down after it was destroyed in a blaze during the wide-spread protests in the country. The loss due to the blaze was over EGP120 million ($20.1 million), said a Makro Egypt statement.

Maktro Egypt, a unit of Metro Group, one of the largest international retailing companies, announced that it has got approval from the government to rebuild the store in Cairo.

The company plans to open the store and make it fully operational by the last quarter.

Commenting on their decision to set up this tent, the managing director, Francois Oliver said “At Makro we strive to consistently meet and exceed the expectations of our customers, our decision to host this tent was a direct response to the needs of over 70,000 of Salam City consumers who rely on us for the highest quality products.

As the only wholesale store in Egypt our role during Ramadan is even more crucial given the bulk of food supplies business professionals need during this month,” he added.-TradeArabia News Service
