Bahrain group prepares for dialogue
Manama, June 19, 2011
A political opposition group whose leader has been arrested in connection with a plot to topple the Bahrain's government has been invited to take part in the national dialogue.
National Democratic Action Society (Wa'ad) members on Saturday confirmed they had received a request to participate in the process, which begins next month.
'We have received the invitation and will soon nominate a representative,' said society deputy secretary-general Redha Al Mousawi.
The society's secretary-general Ibrahim Sharif is among 21 men charged in connection with a plot to topple the government.
'We request His Majesty King Hamad to release Sharif ahead of the national dialogue,' said Al Mousawi.
The society has also been informed that its offices in Umm Al Hassam and Arad will now be allowed to open.
The Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry said it had lifted the ban on Wa'ad issued in accordance with the declaration of the State of National Safety.
'We received information from the Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry and Interior Ministry that they have re-opened both our buildings,' said Al Mousawi. 'We can now prepare for the national dialogue with our members.'
Authorities closed down the society headquarters in Umm Al Hassam in April. The Muharraq Municipal Council also voted to shut down its branch in Arad on June 1, saying its presence was illegal.
It followed complaints by residents who submitted several petitions against the branch, saying the area was classified for residential use and not for political meetings.
Residents also accused the society of hosting unlicensed symposiums and lectures.
The society's Arad branch was sabotaged on March 12 and its headquarters twice attacked with Molotov cocktails on March 15 and 18.
Meanwhile, members of the Bahrain Human Rights Society (BHRS) confirmed they had also been invited to participate in the national dialogue, which will be chaired by parliament chairman Khalifa Al Dhahrani.
'We received the invitations and are now preparing our agenda to be submitted in the dialogue process,' said former BHRS secretary-general Abdulla Al Deerazi.-TradeArabia News Service
