Bahrain is set to begin implementing an outdoor summer work ban from July 1, said a senior government official.

Labour Ministry Under-Secretary Subah Salem Al Dossary said the two-month ban would be effectively enforced between noon and 4 pm and cover all outdoor work.

'This is the fifth year in a row that the ban is being implemented and it intends to protect the heath of the workers and ensure they get adequate rest during the hot summer months,' he said.

Al Dossary said it also aimed at enhancing productivity and protecting the health of thousands of labourers at construction sites.

He said companies that violate the ban were liable to be fined between BD50 ($132.60) and BD300 per worker.

A compliance rate of more than 98 per cent was reported on the summer work ban last year, even as more than 200 violations were reported.

All outside work must stop from noon to 4 pm throughout July and August, the hottest months of the year, according to a ministerial decree enforcing the ban.

Al Dossary said ministry inspectors would be out in force to ensure the ban was being implemented.

'We have also prepared a plan for a campaign that would look at educating employers and employees on the provisions of the ban,' he said.

'Inspectors will also make sure workers are provided with a continuous supply of cool drinking water, helmets, gloves and shoes.'

Al Dossary said posters at work sites in several languages would also inform workers on how to take care of themselves and how to follow rules and regulations. – TradeArabia News Service
