Bahrain trade unions 'must abide by the law'

Manama, April 26, 2011

Bahrain has reiterated its commitment to guarantee all legal and labour rights, in line with international covenants.

However, it stressed the need to abide by the law on trade unions and other Bahraini legislations.

'The measures, which aim to protect Bahrain's security and stability, are in line with the law provisions and the state sovereignty,' Labour Minister Jameel Humaidan yesterday said.

Receiving Arab Labour Organisation (ALO) director-general Ahmed Mohammed Loqman, he stressed Bahrain's commitment to ensure all legal guarantees - including the right to lodge labour complaints.

He pointed out the government's keenness to ensure the trade union movement stick to its essential objectives - defending workers' rights and achievements beyond any politicisation and sectarianism.

The two sides discussed the agenda of the forthcoming ALO Conference, set to be held from May 15 to 22 in Egypt. Acting under-secretary Sabah Salem Al Dosary and other senior officials attended the meeting.-TradeArabia News Service
