Bahrain celebrates National Day
Manama, December 16, 2010
Bahrain today celebrates National Day - and marks 11 years of significant political, social and economic reforms since the accession of His Majesty King Hamad.
Scores of activities are taking place around the kingdom as thousands celebrate an era of achievements.
'There has been significant progress during these years and there is still much to do as we strive to realise our ambitions for Bahrain,' said a Bahrain News Agency statement.
'The decade of reforms began with the accession of His Majesty in 1999 and 2001 saw the publication of the National Action Charter, which set out the key principles of governance, including the introduction of parliamentary elections.
'The Charter was ratified by national referendum with 98.4 per cent of voters in favour.
'The first parliamentary elections were held in October 2002, with parliament sitting for the first time in November.
'Six women were appointed to the Shura Council, recognising the important contribution of women in Bahrain.
'In 2003, the Tender Board was set up to ensure transparency, fairness and equal opportunity across all public sector and government transactions,' the statement said.
'Bahrain also launched labour market reforms, including the creation of the Labour Market Regulatory Authority.
'In 2008, the King launched Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030 with the overall goal of doubling household income by 2030.
'The kingdom will continue to introduce reforms, ensuring that the kingdom maintains its course of steady progress and sustainable growth that has been witnessed during His Majesty's rule for the last 11 years,' the statement said. – TradeArabia News Service
