GAM to intensify Ramadan food inspections
Amman, August 10, 2010
Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) said its team has started conducting inspections at all food centers and markets ahead of Ramadan to ensure that all products meet the hygiene requirements.
Director of Health and Vocations Control at GAM, Dr Mervat Mheirat, said GAM in co-ordination with the Jordan Food and Drug Association (JFDA), had adopted several strict procedures on the food products and their validity.
According to Mheirat, GAM had prepared an intensive control program on the food validity; according to shifts, the program starts as of the morning until Sohour hours.
'The inspection will focus on products of high demand during Ramadan to avoid any sanitary violations,' he noted.
Mheirat pointed out that GAM authorities will intensify their inspections to the consumption centers, malls, restaurants, kitchens, tents, bakeries, and food warehouses, in addition to the butcher shops, the public markets, and the street vendors during the holy month.
He said the teams will focus on products that are in big demand during Ramadan such as dates, nuts, juices, meat, packaged soup, yogurt and dairy products, salads, pickles, pastries, and sweets.
GAM cautioned the public from buying juices from outside vendors as 'they don’t comply with the safe manufacturing requirements, and are not subject to health control.'
The authorities have formed a joint team with JFDA to conduct inspections at major areas including Al Wehdat and Al Hussein camps, Sa’f El Seil, Al Sukkar Market, Al Nasr, Hai Nazzal, Raghdan, and Sahab.-TradeArabia News Service
