Cyclone Phet death toll rises to 16 in Oman

Muscat, June 5, 2010

Cyclone Phet killed a total of 16 people in Oman on Friday and wounded dozens more, state television and medical staff said on Saturday.

State television reported 12 dead on Saturday and a hospital doctor in Muscat, who declined to be named, told Reuters a further two had been killed: 11 Omani nationals, two Bangladeshis and a Pakistani.

Two others were reported dead on Friday.

Cyclone Phet, despite weakening to a Category 1 storm, pummelled Oman's coastline on Friday.

Earlier on Saturday Oman LNG said it had resumed production after it was shut on Friday due to the storm. – Reuters
