Jordan buys 50,000 T Black Sea wheat

Amman, April 22, 2010

Jordan has bought 50,000 tonnes of Black Sea origin wheat at $211 per tonne C&F for shipment in July, a grain official said on Wednesday.

The original tender was for 100,000 tonnes of wheat, but only half of that amount was purchased because other bids were too high.

Traders said the following bids were made per tonne c&f in the tender which was awarded to Jordan Army Retirement Fund: Glencore $226.5, Allegrow $228, Bunge $237, Nibulon $228.9, Louis Dreyfus $245.95 and Cargill $223.

Jordan's state grain buyer at the start of April issued an international tender to purchase 100,000 tonnes of hard wheat which closed on Wednesday. The grain could be sourced from any origin. Some 50,000 tonnes was for shipment in the first or second half of July and the rest in the second half of August.

Jordan has not been in the international market since its last tender on February 3, when it bought 100,000 tonnes of Black Sea origin wheat at $218 a tonne on a cost and freight basis, for May shipment.

Traders said Jordan was among major importers that have been holding back from making purchases in recent weeks in the hope that current bearish prices would fall further, bringing savings to the country's deficit ridden budget.

Jordan's monthly consumption of wheat is between 50,000 and 60,000 tonnes and the kingdom imports a similar quantity of barley.-Reuters
