Jordan website wins top international prize
Amman, September 28, 2009
Talasim.com, a leading Arabic website based in Jordan, has snatched the top prize in the SeedCamp international competition, which concluded in London recently.
The award winning followed a marathon competition, where 20 companies out of 1,500 contenders had qualified for the finals. The jackpot was a 50,000-euro prize.
“We are thrilled over winning this international competition, an achievement that testifies to Arab young people’s ability to excel in this age of hi-tech and take the lead from Western and Eastern countries that pioneered in this field,” said Talasim.com’s co-founder and business development manager Sabri Hakim.
Being the only Arabic site running for the competition and a representative of the region, Talasim.com was supported and financed by Queen Rania Center for Entrepreneurship (QRCE) and Royal Jordanian.
“This achievement and the recent Yahoo!’s acquisition of Jordanian website maktoob.com highlight Jordan’s lofty status on the technology map and the creativity of Jordanian youth,” stated QRCE’s executive director Mohammad Khawaja.
Outlining the edge talasim.com enjoys vis-à-vis other Arabic sites, Hakim said the electronic services offered by the site are coupled with a humoristic and realistic approach to help Arab youth express themselves in a more spontaneous manner.
With the growth of the number of visitors to Arabic websites, Hakim forecast that these sites’ share in advertising revenues would increase, especially since they have a great technical potential that conventional channels lack. In addition, he said, web-based advertising allows control over ad campaigns that can be evaluated and re-adjusted during the process to yield the best results and achieve the goals of the campaign.-TradeArabia News Service
