Dubai One offers 'cool' movies this summer
Dubai, June 28, 2009
Dubai One, a leading Dubai-based English channel, has lined up the coolest of Hollywood movies through out July for the viewers who are bracing for a sizzling summer ahead.
For viewers who want to sink their teeth into a classic story, Gone with the Wind, one of the greatest epic films ever made, does not disappoint, the channel said in a statement.
The film has achieved an iconic status in the history of Hollywood cinema. Vivien Leigh’s Scarlett O’Hara and Clark Gable’s dashingly dangerous Rhett Butler make the screen as fiery as the Civil War that forms the backdrop of their tempestuous romance.
Brave Heart sees a career-defining experience from Mel Gibson as William Wallace, the legendary Scottish freedom fighter who leads an uprising against the occupying English king, despite the fact that the Scots have less men and firepower than their technologically superior foes, it said.
Two literary love stories pay homage to some of the greatest writers of English literature. 'In Becoming Jane,' Anne Hathaway plays Jane Austen as a feisty young woman who falls in love with a man who is everything she could hope for in a man, except being acceptable to her parents.
Iris is based on the life of British writer Iris Murdoch, told through the eyes of her husband of 40 years as she descends from intellectual powerhouse to Alzheimer’s patient, relying on her husband for the simplest tasks.
Kate Winslet plays the young Iris, and Dame Judy Dench turns in a searing performance as Murdoch’s later incarnation.
Winslet stars alongside British acting legends Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility, the Oscar-winning screen adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel about three plucky sisters left penniless by laws of inheritance after the death of their father.
Will their lack of estate affect their marriagiability? Not if they are Jane Austen’s clever, witty heroines!
Being Julia also concerns the social side of love, in the setting of the 1930s London theatre scene. Julia Lambert (Annette Benning), an aging diva, falls for a young American actor whom she finds is using her to advance his own career.
Three films evoke the magical atmosphere of Paris: starring Audrey Tautou as part of a stunning ensemble cast, Poupees Russes (Russian Dolls) follows up with a group of friends in their early thirties as they search for lasting love and fulfilling careers.
Xavier had hoped to be a novelist, but is a ghost writer for celebrity biographies. His love life has been less than stellar, but he now has a choice between a model with a ‘perfect’ life, and a complicated, beautiful and loving woman who knows him inside out.
In Moulin Rouge, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor play out the ultimate Parisian love story as Christian, a young English poet, and Satine, the beautiful star of the Moulin Rouge club.
Three films take viewers to the sordid side of the society in the US: 25th Hour, The Good Shepherd and In The Jacket.
Two comedies lighten up the offerings for July: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the ultimate adventure film for sweet tooths.
Chocolate maniac Charlie Bucket wins a ticket for a tour around the eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka’s (Johnny Depp) factory. Along with a spoiled brat, a glutton, a TV junkie and a gum smacking smartypants, Charlie is in for the tour of his life. Will he win Wonka’s grand prize at the end?
