Kempinski Hotel to become eco-friendly

Dubai, September 17, 2008

Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates is set to introduce new eco-friendly measures to minimise the hotel's carbon ‘footprint’.

The hotel is currently undergoing preliminary reviews to establish what is required by the United States Green Building Council (USGC) in order to obtain theirLeadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Evaluations will be conducted according to the guidelines set by LEED and studies will be undertaken by an external consultant to advise if any requirements of changes are to be executed.

“In order for us to be categorised as ‘green’ there are six different objectives we need to undergo assessment for, which include sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in operation, which pertain to our existing building,” said Mohamed Zeid, Kempinski Hotel technical director.

“Initially to understand our ability for sustainability, the hotel needs to analyse the sum of its impact or ‘footprint’. A sustainable hotel needs to have as small a ‘footprint’ as possible,” continued Zeid.

Over the coming months, energy saving methods will be introduced; water-saving equipment and techniques will be implemented, recycling encouraged amongst staff and guest to reduce conventional waste-haulage, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
