Bahrain warning over cyclone Gonu

Manama, June 10, 2007

People in Bahrain are being warned not to go out to sea today (June 10), with killer cyclone Gonu still a threat.

More flooding in coastal areas is also likely today because of the rise in sea level caused by the cyclone, weathermen warned. But officials said people had no cause to panic.

The stay-ashore warning came following a sudden rise in sea level, which caused flooding on roads in Jaw and Askar and shores at various parts of Bahrain on Friday night.

People must be careful, follow weather reports and any instructions it may issue, they said.

A slight flooding on roads at these areas and several shores continued yesterday and is likely to happen again today.

Waves are expected to rise up to six to eight feet offshore in the coming days, said a Directorate of Meteorology spokesman.

Shamal (northern) wind is expected from today and sand and dust is expected in some areas in the following days.

The National Disasters Committee held an emergency meeting yesterday to discuss the situation.

It set up a team from the Coastguard to monitor various areas.

It also co-ordinated with the Education Ministry and the General Organisation for Youth and Sports to allocate schools and clubs to be turned into shelters in case of an emergency. -TradeArabia News Service
