TRA launches campaign on SIM card misuse

MANAMA, July 23, 2016

Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched a campaign to raise awareness of consumers to risks of mobile SIM-card misuse and the importance of having people protect themselves.

The “Your SIM Your Responsibility” was launched on July 10.

“People need to register their SIM cards, they need to know how many SIM cards are in their name and who is using it,” said Taiba Al Binali, TRA’s acting director of consumer affairs and media. “The legal and financial risks you put yourself in by not taking these precautions are serious, and you can be held accountable for them. Keep a close eye on the campaign to learn more about how to stay safe from SIM related fraud,” she said.

Consumers are asked to ensure that SIM cards are not registered in their name without their knowledge with mobile operators. They also should not share their SIMs with other people in order to avoid being held accountable, she said.
The campaign will also encourage residents and visitors to cancel any SIM cards registered in their names in case they leave the country permanently to avoid misuse such as identity theft, fraud, or avoidable financial obligations.

The campaign follows a regulation for SIM card registration issued last year as a step to protect consumer interest. - TradeArabia News Service
