UAE govt staff designs passport scanner

ABU DHABI, October 25, 2015

An official at UAE’s Ministry of Interior has designed a first-of-its-kind device to scan and read all types of travel documents and passports used around the world.

Lt General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, recently reviewed the device invented by Sergeant Amer Al Jabri, from the Directorate General of Residency and Foreigners Affairs.

Al Nahyan was briefed on the new invention, which marks a quantum leap towards enhancing police and security work and could be leveraged across all land border points and airports. This invention further promotes the government’s vision aimed at positioning the UAE in the forefront of the most developed countries in terms of safety and security.

The inventor explained that the device requires no electrical connections, and is made of "eco-friendly" materials; which maintains the occupational safety of employees.

“It is a low-cost device that includes a microscope, which provides a magnification of up to twenty times larger and clearer of the original image than in similar devices,” he said.

He added that the new device has a scanning feature to read airline tickets, barcodes and international ID documents; in addition to a number of integrated properties and applications, unlike other devices which can only perform one task at a time. – TradeArabia News Service
