New deal for high-speed fiber optic for Oman

MUSCAT, September 27, 2015

The Information Technology Authority (ITA) and Oman Broadband Company (OBC) have entered into an agreement for the first stage implementation of high-speed fiber optic for Oman Government Network (OGN), a report said.

The deal will connect the current 63 governmental entities hosted by the OGN, providing high-speed connectivity and linked to the National Data Centre at ITA, in addition to another backup data centre, according to the Oman Observer report.

“This network will transfer data among these government entities significantly as this would serve to unite all government data in a unified national data centre,” Said bin Abdullah al Mantheri, chief executive officer of OBC was quoted as saying in the report.

The agreement will boost each government entity with one Gbps, (Gigabits per second) and is faster than the current network speed by 1,000 times, throughout fiber optic connection, the report highlighted, adding that the project is expected to be complete within 12 months.
