DSG hosts hackathon contest at Dubai expo

DUBAI, June 13, 2015

The Dubai Smart Government Department (DSG) organised a hackathon contest during the Internet of Things Expo (IoTx) recently held in Dubai, UAE.

Marwan Bin Haidar, executive director of Planning and Development at DSG, opened the two-day event on June 9, at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

A total of 36 contestants took part in teams to come up with solutions for the future of smart cities, under three domains: smart life, smart economy and smart tourism.

Each team had to complete the task within the ten hours allocated to them, said a statement from DSG.

Bin Haidar, also the head of the competition’s jury, announced the results awarding the first position to the smart waste containers project, said the statement.

Created under the theme of smart life, the winning project’s design involved the use of sensors in the waste containers which could send signals directly to the municipality when full.

An emergency device for natural disasters, also under the theme of smart life, came second. Their project showcased a drone-like device capable of relaying vital information to the authorities for quick action in the event of disasters.

The third place was won by a team that created a smart store app that would send alerts when food supplies or medicines run out of stock and send a reminder on the expiry date of the products, it said.

Ahmad Bin Humaidan, director general of DSG, inspected the Hackathon and highlighted the importance of holding such competitions that stimulate continuous innovation and creativity amidst global competitiveness over smart transformation that seeks not only customer satisfaction but also engagement of the society in creating smart services. – TradeArabia News Service
