Batelco, Ericsson ink major 4G upgrade deal

MANAMA, October 13, 2014

Batelco, a leading telecom provider in Bahrain and Ericsson, a global IT company, have signed a new agreement aimed at upgrading Batelco’s 4G network to provide faster mobile broadband, superior voice quality and a set of new services.

The new network enhancement programme is designed to meet the growing customer demand for increasingly powerful mobile services, a statement said, adding that the network will be expanded to cover new areas across the country.

Batelco Group & Acting Bahrain CEO Alan Whelan and head of Ericsson Gulf Council Countries Victoria Strand signed the agreement at a recent meeting in Dubai.

“Batelco was the first telecom provider to launch 4G LTE networks in Bahrain early in 2013 with the delivery of up to 100 Mbps download speed, which was later upgraded to 150Mbps,” said Whelan.

“We are continuing with our commitment to provide our subscribers with state of the art technologies and the latest innovative services. Accordingly, the 4G network enhancement is a part of a series of rollouts being implemented as a result of our ongoing investment in the Kingdom’s infrastructure.”

Strand said: “We are happy to extend our long-standing partnership with Batelco, and to provide them with Ericsson’s latest innovative solutions to empower their network. This major transformation will allow Batelco to offer their customers a greater experience and meet their ever-increasing demands.”

The enhancement project is already underway, and customers will begin to experience the great benefits very soon, according to the statement. – TradeArabia News Service
