Bahrain firms told to use smart IDs for telecom deals

Manama, June 30, 2014

Bahrain’s Telecommunication Regulatory Authority has directed all operators to officially adopt GCC smart ID cards in all transactions.

Sheikh Abdulla bin Humood Al Khalifa, director of consumer affairs, said: "The authority is keen on co-operating with operators to make certain that they are capable of providing high-quality telecommunications services to GCC consumers as urgently as possible.

“This will be achieved through their electronic systems and programmes tailored for meeting GCC citizens’ needs and requirements based on the principle of treating GCC citizens on an equal footing with Bahraini citizens and residents.”

The operators have been informed of the decision by the authorities, to be implemented from the data of publication, said a statement.

The authority also held a workshop at its headquarters to explain the consequences of the law, stressing that it believes in the importance of facilitating and simplifying the procedures for consumers, citizens and residents in Bahrain in relation to this aspect, it added. - TradeArabia News Service
