Smartworld installs gigabit network in DWC

Dubai, December 16, 2012

Smartworld, a leading next generation ICT provider in the Middle East, has achieved a milestone with the implementation of a Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) network in Dubai World Central (DWC).

The launch puts DWC, the world’s first purpose-built aerotropolis, into the league of prestigious gigabit capable precincts of the world and provides Next Generation Network (NGN) capabilities to ICT users in DWC, said a statement.

The NGN is the first of its kind ‘open access’ network in the region, as one access can be used by multiple services providers. The gigabit-capable network infrastructure is based on FTTP (fiber to the premises) design and is capable of delivering up to 1 gigabit of bandwidth capacity to an individual office.

Rashed Bu Qara'a, chief operating officer of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, said: “Smartworld’s implementation of the Gigabit Passive Optical Network is an important milestone that reinforces the reputation of Dubai World Central as one of the world’s most sophisticated and technologically superior aviation hubs in the world. Following the success of this project, DWC will continue to work closely and take advantage of Smartworld’s specialized expertise and capabilities to develop and implement innovative technology solutions that further enhance the strategic advantage of DWC as one of the most lucrative destinations for leading multinationals, investors and entrepreneurs from all over the world.”

Reyadh Ayesh, CEO, Smartworld, said: “The next-generation network unlocks more exciting possibilities for business enterprises operating at DWC, giving them unprecedented networking and communication capabilities. Moreover, the network is also designed to handle the critical requirements of DWC’s Al Maktoum International Airport, with a high bandwidth and unmatched flexibility. On one hand it can allow the provisioning of ultrahigh bandwidth IP services and at the same time it caters to the legacy network, thus serving the varying needs of different customers.”

Through the GPON network, over 60 services, including high speed internet up to 100 MB, fax, telephone and internet leased line, was provided to exhibitors, organizers and government entities at the recently concluded MEBA event. Smartworld, as a next step will extend the benefit of this new network service to other tenants of DWC.

The network will allow telecom companies to provide services to its users and at the same time cater to the requirements of backhaul bandwidth for 3G and LTE mobile networks. It will also be used by managed service providers like Smartworld to provide next generation managed services, the statement said. – TradeArabia News Service
