Dubai to boost ICT exports to South Asia

Dubai, October 25, 2008

Dubai Export Development Corporation (EDC), the export promotion & facilitation arm of the Government of Dubai, organised a business matchmaking forum involving more than 70 companies, to enhance the export opportunities of the Emirate’s ICT products and services into South Asia.

The forum, entitled ‘Indian ICT Sector and Opportunities in a High Growth Market’, provided various buyers from India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan the chance to discuss and explore Information Communication (ICT) businesses and import products and services from companies out of Dubai, contributing to the growth of Dubai's knowledge economy.

According to recent reports, South Asia's ICT market is currently booming with Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan taking the top three places respectively in terms of its GDP per capita.

"The forum was very timely with thousands of visitors currently in the Emirate to visit Gitex, resulting in an increase in potential export prospects for Dubai's ICT sector.

"The forum was held under His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision of Dubai for 2015 with our main objective being to highlight Dubai’s strategic platform of making its ICT sector known regionally - particularly its eServices and eGovernment solutions," said Saed Al Awadi, chief executive officer, EDC.

"With Dubai and the UAE considered to be the ICT hub in the Middle East region, the forum will aid these interested South Asian buyers to import ICT products and services from Dubai.

"This is an extremely encouraging approach to demonstrate and implement the Emirate’s expertise in ICT solutions and to drive Dubai ICT enterprises to operate locally, regionally and globally," he added.

The business matchmaking forum, coinciding with Gitex Technology Week, was attended by more than 70 South Asian companies with some revealing future roadmaps of establishing offices and enhancing their presence in Dubai and the UAE.

Additionally, EDC officials with EDC's strategic partner – Dubai Internet City (DIC) and the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade), provided presentations of various strategic programmes on conducting business in Dubai.

"For more than three months, EDC has spared no efforts to organise this forum for Dubai ICT companies and South Asian buyers.

"We have represented and held meetings with various organisations discussing possibilities of partnerships with both Dubai and South Asian companies," said Harsh Mohan Puri, EDC Country Representative in India.

India is one of the top ten leading and booming ICT markets in the world and the Federal and State Governments of India are currently committed to developing e-Governance in the country.

EDC is participating at Gitex Technology Week under the Dubai eGovernment umbrella to showcase to ICT companies the export opportunities available outside UAE.

EDC continues to support the Dubai eGovernment through showcases in various events within and outside the country, demonstrating the eGovernment solutions the Emirate is currently implementing. - TradeArabia News Service
