Iranian port aims for Silk Road registration
TEHRAN, December 21, 2016
The central Iranian dry port of Yazd is pushing for registration in the Silk Road plan, said a senior official in a report.
China is preparing to transit goods to Europe via Iran, Hossein Ezabadi, commercial manager, Pishgaman Dry Port Kousar Company, was quoted as saying in an Iran Daily News report.
He added that the cooperation will come as part of China's New Silk Road plan and is backed by Asian Development Bank.
Based on the plan, China will ship cargos to Iran for onward transfer to Europe overland.
Ezabadi said that Yazd dry port is Iran's first privately-held dry port.
He noted that it is being constructed in an area of 700 hectares. It has access via the nationwide railroad to Bandar Abbas and Rajaei Port as well as to the northern Iranian ports.
Ezabadi added that the first phase of the dry port is fully prepared to offer services, adding if legal gaps are filled and it becomes operational, the first phase will be able to handle two million tonnes of cargo a year.
