APM Terminals Bahrain marks ‘Global Safety Day’

MANAMA, May 8, 2015

APM Terminals Bahrain, a subsidiary of leading port infrastructure and operator of Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP), recently held a range of activities as part of the global celebrations commemorating Global Safety Day that was celebrated across all of the APM Terminals around the world.

The event, this year, was moved up to April, in line with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the United Nations (UN) who celebrate World Day for Health at Work on April 28 every year, said a statement.

To mark the celebrations, APM Terminals Bahrain joined APM Terminals ports around the world in rolling out its Fatal-5 Standards, which were critical areas identified as the highest risk areas to focus on in order to eliminate fatalities and further promote safe operations, which are underpinned by minimum controls on each of the five critical areas.

The theme of this year was the theme was ‘Safe at Home, Safe at Work’ - an initiative aimed at improving safety culture both at work as well as at home; with an emphasis on one of the Fatal 5 standard of ‘Transportation Safety.’ All of the employees of APM Terminals Bahrain took part in the activities.

Marco Neelsen, chief executive officer at APM Terminals, Bahrain, said: “At APM Terminals Bahrain, safety is a fundamental part of the way we do business, and as such we are committed to foster this culture among our employees both at work sites and at home.

“As part of these efforts, we are pleased to roll out the new Fatal-5 Standards initiative across the organisation on Global Safety Day. We are confident that these new safety initiatives will create a preventive safety and health culture among our employees and visitors to achieve zero injuries.”

An awareness session on risks associated with fasting fatigue, as well as chronic medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension were discussed to the employees and terminal workers.

Further to this the dangers associated with drug and alcohol consumption were highlighted to employees and external truck drivers.

Safety tours were conducted to interact with ground staff and contractors on a ground level and highlight the risk of unsafe behaviour. In addition, a special safety quiz was conducted for truck drivers and prizes were handed out.

The activities throughout the day encouraged all employees from the management team through to crane drivers and terminal workers, to highlight the well-established value of putting safety first, above all else. - TradeArabia News Service
