Largest micrometer makes UAE debut

Abu Dhabi, November 15, 2011

The world’s largest and most precise internal micrometer system, which can measure bore holes down to an exact millimeter, made its UAE debut yesterday at the Middle East Manufacturing Exhibition (Memex 2011).

The instrument is the only one in the world which can measure bore holes from 400 mm to 1150 mm in size with unrivalled accuracy, said a statement.

The instrument, extremely light in build and portable, comes with extra hard ratchets to achieve perfect self-centering. The instrument  is suitable for both vertical and horizontal applications, it said.

“This instrument, which costs less than $4,500 is the most advanced in the industry for this specific application. The price is minute in comparison to the penalties which could arise, possibly millions of dollars for example, if a bore hole is not maintained and measured properly,” said Patrick Pfister, managing director of Microtest AG.

“Apart from its incredible accuracy, a testament to Swiss precision engineering, the major benefit of the micrometer is its portability. It is designed for field applications, saving piping engineers time and money,” said Binu Pillai, exhibition director, Memex 2011.

Memex, which concludes today at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, has attracted over 100 exhibiting companies, representing more than 400 brands.

Key sectors represented at the three-day show include metal fabrication, surface treatment, welding and cutting, machine tools and woodworking, with 70 per cent of exhibitors showcasing industrial machinery.
