Emirates NBD, RTA team up for transport cards

Dubai, September 7, 2009

Emirates NBD, a leading banking group, and the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai will join forces to circulate the unified electronic fare card, or “Nol” cards, the latest technology in transport cards.

“The revolutionary Nol chip cards are unified automated fare collection cards which will be the only method accepted for paying transportation fares throughout Dubai,” said Abdulla Al Madani, CEO of RTA's corporate technical support services sector.

“Coming in 4 different classifications, Red, Blue, Silver and Gold tickets, Nol cards will provide commuters with a heightened sense of simplicity and convenience as the fare for public transport is automatically deducted on a ‘pay as you go’ basis”, and we are pleased with the cooperation with Emirates NBD,” he added.

'Starting September 9, the Nol cards can be purchased and recharged at Emirates NBD branches and are for all consumers, not just bank account holders,” Al Madani continued.

“The top up service will also eventually be obtainable through electronic banking channels such as ATMs, CDMs, Internet banking and via SMS for additional convenience.”

Jamal Bin Ghalaita, group deputy CEO Emirates NBD, said: “As part of our commitment to consistently provide consumers with ground-breaking products and services, we are delighted to partner with RTA to present the inventive Nol Cards which will help increase the smooth flow of public transportation.”

“Public transport users will not endure the hassle of sorting through change anymore; instead they can recharge their cards by using one of the many channels we are offering. Emirates NBD is an avid supporter of all governmental organisations and the banking group is dedicated to being involved in ongoing projects that promote greater benefits for the general public,” he added.

Bin Ghalaita continued: “Emirates NBD is an accessible one –stop-shop for all daily necessities ranging from paying telecom bills, utilities, rent, fines, and with the introduction of the Nol cards we are adding one more convenience to our bouquet of services.

“It was Emirates NBD and RTA’s mutual goal to devise a way to make the whole process of public transport as effortless as possible. The use of Nol cards will definitely save time, increase efficiency and productivity.”

“Moreover, this process will provide the best and most evenly balanced system for collecting fares from all passengers and is an excellent means of detecting those who attempt to elude fare payment,” Bin Ghalaita concluded.

Emirates NBD is the RTA’s exclusive bank affiliate and distributor of the Nol cards throughout the UAE, with consumer access initially commencing in branches within Dubai and Sharjah, said a statement. – TradeArabia News Service
