Teams sign up to MOQP Challenge to tackle diabetes

DOHA, November 10, 2015

Thirty teams from different companies and organisations in Qatar will again compete over two exhilarating days, raising money for and awareness of 'Action on Diabetes' Partnership in Doha.

The fourth Maersk Oil and Qatar Petroleum (MOQP) Challenge, which will take place on November 14 and 15 at the Sealine Resort, will see around 100 participants from more than twenty teams compete over two days in the country’s largest corporate team-building event designed to raise awareness and funds to tackle diabetes in Qatar.

The event will feature teams representing some of Qatar’s largest and best-known organisations from both the public and private sector.

The 2015 challenge sees the involvement of teams representing organisations from sectors as diverse as energy, health, higher education, advertising and professional services as well as a Ministry.

The organisations competing include the Supreme Council of Health, Maersk Oil Qatar, Action on Diabetes, Schlumbeger, Oxy, Gulf Drilling International, WorleyParsons, Texas A&M, Tripletwo, Gasal, Dolphin Energy and Al Shaheen Weatherford.

The participants are now in the final stages of preparing for challenges that will test them to the limit over five gruelling stages. These include a series of tasks that focus on strategy and decision-making and test their ability to work as a team, as well as activities designed to stretch their physical and mental agility.

Spread over 48 hours, each of the five inter-related stages is themed around a key lifestyle issue related to diabetes such as healthy eating and avoiding long-term damage to feet and eyes.

Teams will be required to solve problems, navigate their way around a specially designed course, run, ride mountain bikes and kayak to succeed.

The MOQP Challenge further promotes the work of Action on Diabetes (AoD), a public-private partnership initiated and funded by Maersk Oil Qatar that aims to help raise awareness of diabetes, assist those at risk to avoid it, and help people already living with the condition to manage their health.

All money raised from the registration fees will be donated to the Qatar Diabetes Association through the AoD partnership. This will be used to fund the 15th Al Bawasil Camp, a seven-day educational camp for children with diabetes from Qatar.

Lewis Affleck, managing director of Maersk Oil Qatar, said: “We’re delighted with the level of interest and commitment shown by teams registered to take part in this year’s MOQP Challenge. It’s great to see some of Qatar’s biggest and most established organisations come together to raise money and play their part in tackling one of the country’s biggest health challenges.

"Involvement in this important initiative is further proof of our commitment to making a meaningful contribution to Qatari society through social investment projects that make a long-term difference to health, the environment and education.”

Every year the MOQP Challenge coincides with World Diabetes Day (WDD), the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign with events organised in more than 100 countries last year.

Led by the International Diabetes Federation, WDD unites the global diabetes community to produce a powerful voice for diabetes awareness and advocacy.

In addition to the MOQP Challenge, Action on Diabetes will be hosting a Diabetes Screening Awareness Village at Katara from November 12 to 14. Visitors can benefit from a free diabetes-screening test, access to specialist Diabetes Educators for consultation and advice. - TradeArabia News Service
